Collision and Counterweight

After reading the “Who’s Irish” by Gish Jen i was I certainly was attracted to the story, especially the role which her grandmother, it's reminds me of my grandmother and my childhood. I am a student from China, when I read the whole article, I have every reason to believe that such thinking appears in the grandmother who is the real and full of charm.
Perhaps from the Western point of view, The grandmother is full of harsh, overbearing. She looked down idle son, and humiliate his family, speak English and physical health, but does not work support the family, and even scoff at their diet to express discrimination. But as a concept has a traditional Chinese woman, she definitely is a character of perseverance and selfless woman.
In the article inside, the collision between granddaughter with her grandmother, full of realism and humor. This appears to be a collision between two people, in fact that's the Counterweight to the cultural and age differences.Little granddaughter is very stubborn personality, she likes to undress in the outside, but it is intolerable in the eyes of Grandma, Grandma does not give food and other means to threaten small granddaughter no effect, in the end her use violence form that on the granddaughter never undress. In Irish eyes, maybe they never thought of beating the child, but in China, beat the children when they was young kids are very common, physical pain is more persuasive than the language. However, when the granddaughter was asleep in the park, Grandma worries frightened. She loved her granddaughter, but there are differences of expression. In the confrontation between granddaughter and grandmother, there is no winner, because Grandma is with traditional Chinese philosophy and educational approach to the granddaughter who was growing up in the environment of Ireland. This is the transfer of love, renewal.

She can live alone with a telephone,She did not even know how to speak English  but through her own  restaurant to live in Ireland. more than that she was helping her daughter to watching her grannddaughter. we can understand she was an Independent woman.
