Homebase

After reading the whole article, “Homebase”, The protagonist Rainsford's personality attracted me, what a Bright, strong child, it’s deeply moved my heart. The Article with a lot of different characters is a feature on writing techniques, but the plot twists and turns are the most attractive place. There are two stories were happened to him give me a profound memory. One is he unintentionally called his dad “Bobby” instead of “Daddy” and other one is about the “Death” on his parents.

Let’s talk a little bit about the easy and happy thing, he unintentionally called his dad “Bobby” instead of “Daddy”. The concept of transfer systems in Asia, the generational divide is very clear, if you direct call the name it’s very impolite to elders, like ask a lady her age. But perhaps he had grown up with Western education, this concept is not strong. In Asians mind, this kind of calling is a rude, uneducated behavior, but in here it’s very cute, this shows that Rainsford is not only thinking his father as the older, but more as a friend. He is definitely proud of his father. While he even call the people who he liked or admired person “Bobby” so that to express his missing for his father. Perhaps the only fatherly love is the most expect thing he was wanted to rely on.

This article touched me most places are definitely what happened to his childhood. The “Death” on his parents. I can’t image there is any other thing could be as sadly as losing the parents. Without parents’ care off the world will be bleak and sad all the time. What a brave, strong boy. When he faced such a disaster, he courageously lived. He is the extended life of his parents. Sometimes, there is no personal experience of pain so that can’t understand the pain of cruel, profoundly. This reminds me of the earthquake in China last year. Sichuan Province in China 7.8 earthquake occurred in more than 20 million people displaced. Although the Government has rushed to the rescue, but a sudden disaster, many families instantly disappear, with the number of people separated from their families. People see them on TV crying, confused, fear. But they can’t really feel these feeling, if you see someone crying in the TV you may feel sad, but some people crying in front of you, you may also shed tears with him, the more closer you touch them, you will feel more deeply emotion.

Rainsford is told “This is your Country. Go out and make yourself at home”.(Page 83). How brave and correct is this encourage. Like many immigrants, Rainsford felt lonely, discrimination, lack of confidence. But psychology suggests is very significant for people. Everyone has a place that was belong to him, find it and make yourself at home. The first generation of immigrants are always the most difficult, because they have to bear the pressure of life, culture shock, language barriers. The second generation is often the most contradictory, because they have to integrate the new culture, people’s accept, after that will be better.

Anthony II: I like how you put this! And of course, in Rainsford's case, he is not first or second generation, but fourth generation, still feeling alienated and not quite at home. His role is still "contradictory," in other words.
